背中に顔を持つ虫のような存在が、樹木のような体にしがみつき共存し、祈りを捧げるような姿勢をとっている。顔部分のみが単独で発見されたこともあり、木の枝や電柱などの棒状のものに取り付いている状態で目撃されている。体部分は単独では動くことができず、顔部分と共存することで顔部分の個体が脳のような役割を果たし、体を動かしていると考えられている。体の部分は、もともと人間によって作られた、面荒を模した木像であったという記録も残されている。

When coexisting with the facial component, the face appears to function as a brain-like organ, enabling locomotion of the body.There are also records suggesting that the body originally took the form of a wooden statue created by humans in the likeness of Menkou.
座ったような体勢のまま記録されていることが多いが、手足をゆっくりと動かして移動することもあるとされている。
頭部の存在は、祈蝉の背部に備わっていた人間の頭部状の存在が独立したもので、木像と共存したものと思われる。
