牛のような胴体に人間に似た頭部を有する異形。口には4本の触手が備わっている。江戸時代から出現記録が残る妖怪「件（くだん）」に似た外見を持つことから両者の関連性が指摘されている。
A grotesque entity possessing the body of a cow and a head closely resembling that of a human. Four tentacle-like appendages are attached to its mouth.
Due to its striking resemblance to the yōkai known as Kudan, whose appearances have been documented since the Edo period, a possible connection between the two has been suggested.
本対象は一定距離以内に接近すると予測不能な攻撃行動を示す危険性がある。これまでに複数の同種個体の存在が確認されている。体表は白と黒のまだら模様を呈し、牛の皮膚を想起させる外見として知られる。
ただし、体表の黒色領域は固定されておらず時間経過や環境要因によって変動する性質を持つ。
This entity exhibits a risk of unpredictable aggressive behavior when approached within a certain distance. Multiple individuals of the same type have been confirmed to exist. Its body surface displays a mottled pattern of white and black, giving it an appearance reminiscent of bovine hide.
However, the black regions of its skin are not fixed and demonstrate a fluctuating nature, changing over time and in response to environmental factors.
全身が黒一色に染まった状態の個体が目撃された事例も存在する。古文書には「厄災の兆しに応じて、その身は暗く沈む」との記述が残されているが、真偽は明らかになっていない。黒一色の個体が目撃された地域では水質悪化や土壌汚染が確認されている。
There have also been documented cases in which individuals were observed with their entire bodies stained uniformly black. Ancient manuscripts contain passages stating that “in response to signs of calamity, its body sinks into darkness,” though the accuracy of this claim remains unverified.
In regions where fully blackened individuals have been sighted, cases of water contamination and soil pollution have subsequently been confirmed.
黒い領域は単なる体色変化ではなく、行き場を失った魂や祈り、名を失った存在が凝縮されたものであり、それぞれが霊的な性質を帯びていると考えられている。そのため、模様の形状は固定されておらず環境の悪化や破壊が進行するにつれて変質する。全身が黒一色に近づいた状態は厄災の前兆ではなく、これ以上魂を受け止める余地が残されていない状態を示している可能性がある。古い記録に見られる「その身が暗く沈む」という表現は、引き受けたものの重さに耐えきれなくなった姿を指しているとも解釈できる。
The black regions are not merely changes in pigmentation but are believed to be condensations of displaced souls, prayers, and nameless beings that have lost their place in the world, each carrying a spiritual quality. Accordingly, the patterns are not fixed and undergo transformation as environmental degradation and destruction progress.
A state in which the body approaches complete blackness may not signify an omen of calamity, but rather indicate that no capacity remains to contain any further souls. The phrase found in ancient records“its body sinks into darkness”may thus be interpreted as describing a form overwhelmed by the weight of what it has taken upon itself.
