牛のような胴体に人間に似た頭部を有する異形。口には4本の触手が備わっている。
件異は、これまでに複数の同種個体の存在が確認されている。体表は白と黒のまだら模様を呈しており、ホルスタイン牛を想起させる外見として知られる。
古い記録においては、件異の身体は現在よりも白い部分が多く、ほぼ全身が白かったとする記述も残されている。時代を経るにつれて、身体に黒い領域を持つ個体が徐々に確認されるようになった。

Several individual Ken i have been confirmed to date. Its body bears a mottled black-and-white pattern, and it is known for an appearance reminiscent of Holstein cattle, a breed introduced to Japan from overseas.
Older records describe Ken i as having far more white on its body, with some accounts portraying it as almost entirely white. Over time, individuals with black patches came to be observed with increasing frequency.
全身が黒一色に染まった状態の個体が目撃された事例も存在する。口元の触手の先端には穴が開いており、そこから白い煙を吐き出すことがある。煙を吐き出すと、その量に比例するかのように体表の黒い模様の領域が減少し、徐々に灰色になっていく。
黒い領域は人間によって改変された自然や、汚染・破壊が進んだ環境の中で、より顕著に現れることが確認されている。
件異がそこで失われた魂を引き受けている救済の神影として考えられていた記録も存在する。
There have also been sightings of individuals whose bodies had turned entirely black. The tips of the tentacles around its mouth are open, and it sometimes exhales white smoke through them. As it does so, the black patches shrink, seemingly in proportion to the amount of smoke released, and the body gradually turns gray.
The black patches have been observed to appear more prominently in environments where nature has been altered by human hands, or where pollution and environmental destruction have advanced.
Some records also indicate that Ken i was regarded as a Shinei of salvation, one that took upon itself the souls lost in such places.
かつて崇められていた存在でありながら、人間の影響によって体表に歪みが生じたと考えられる白黒の模様は、品種改良によって自然と人工の狭間にあるホルスタイン牛と奇妙な類似性を示している。
Although it was once worshipped, the black-and-white patterns on its body, believed to have been distorted by human influence, bear a strange resemblance to Holstein cattle, whose selective breeding places them somewhere between the natural and the artificial.
