面荒/Menkou
腕が四本あり、全長約三メートルにも達する巨人のような異形。
常に能面のような仮面をつけた状態で目撃されるが、古い記録には
「仮面の下には顔そのものが存在しなかった」と記されている。
A giant-like aberrant being with four arms, reaching a total height of approximately three meters.It is always sighted wearing a mask resembling a Noh mask, but ancient records state that“there was no face at all beneath the mask.”
また一説ではもともとは顔を持っていたものの、そのあまりにも恐ろしい容貌ゆえに人間の手によって顔を破壊された過去があるとも言われている。それ以降仮面を身につけるようになり、人間と同じ存在であろうとしているのかもしれない。人間に対する警戒心は非常に強く、過去には人間を襲ったとされる事例も伝えられている。これは人間に対する強い恐怖心が引き起こした行動であると考えられている。
Another theory holds that the entity originally had a face, but that its appearance was so horrifying that humans destroyed it. Since then, it is said to have begun wearing a mask, perhaps in an attempt to become or to be seen as the same kind of being as humans. It exhibits extreme wariness toward humans, and there are accounts of it having attacked people in the past. These actions are believed to have been driven by an intense fear of humans.
発見時には、狭い場所に身を潜めるようにしていることが多いが、身の危険を感じた際には四本の腕を器用に使って壁をよじ登り素早く移動する姿も確認されている。また、「面虚」と同時に発見される例が多く、互いに呼応し合いながら行動している可能性が高いとされる。両者の関係性については現時点では明らかになっていない。
When discovered, the entity is often found hiding in confined spaces; however, when it senses danger, it has been observed using its four arms deftly to climb walls and move with remarkable speed.It is also frequently discovered in conjunction with “Menkyo,” and it is considered highly likely that the two act while responding to one another. The nature of their relationship, however, remains unclear at present.
