腕が四本あり、全長約三メートルにも達する巨人のような異形。
常に能面のような仮面をつけた状態で目撃されるが、古い記録には
「仮面の下には顔そのものが存在しなかった」と記されている。
また一説ではもともとは顔を持っていたものの、そのあまりにも恐ろしい容貌ゆえに江戸時代ごろに人間によって顔を破壊された過去があるとも言われている。
A giant-like aberrant being with four arms, reaching a total height of approximately three meters.It is always sighted wearing a mask resembling a Noh mask, but ancient records state that“there was no face at all beneath the mask.”
According to one theory, Menkou originally possessed a face of its own. However, its appearance was said to be so horrifying that humans destroyed its face sometime around the Edo period
この頃の時代に、顔を失った面荒の木像が作られ山奥に置かれたとされる。
面荒は人間に対する警戒心は非常に強く、過去には人間を襲ったとされる事例も伝えられている。これは人間に対する強い恐怖心が引き起こした行動であると考えられている。
It is said that during this period, wooden statues depicting the faceless Menkou were created and placed deep within the mountains.
Menkou is considered extremely wary of humans, and there are records of incidents in which it attacked people in the past. Such behavior is believed to have been caused by an intense fear of humanity.
発見時には、狭い場所に身を潜めるようにしていることが多いが、身の危険を感じた際には四本の腕を器用に使って壁をよじ登り素早く移動する姿も確認されている。また、「面虚」と同時に発見される例が多く、互いに呼応し合いながら行動している可能性が高いとされる。両者の関係性については現時点では明らかになっていない。
When discovered, Menkou is often found hiding in confined spaces; however, when it senses danger, it has been observed using its four arms deftly to climb walls and move with remarkable speed.It is also frequently discovered in conjunction with “Menkyo,” and it is considered highly likely that the two act while responding to one another. The nature of their relationship, however, remains unclear at present.
